“At Just the Right Time: The Love of God”

Small Groups at Lakeland exist to make disciples who make disciples in relational environments as we live out the four habits – accountability, shepherding, developing others, and on mission.

ICEBREAKER (optional): Would you rather have a dragon or be a dragon?

DISCUSSION STARTER (optional): Let’s start by asking if anyone has a specific takeaway from this weekend’s message that they’d like to share.

  1. SHEPHERDING: This weekend we talked about God’s love being greater than our love. Tell us about a time when you were overwhelmed by God’s love for you?  (For groups with established relationship ask this instead: ‘Tell the group about a time when you felt unloved by God.’)
  2. Our human relationships are so conditional. Do you think we can ever fully grasp the unconditional love of God?  (Push people on their answers.  Good opportunity for some faith-stretching debate!)
  3. ACCOUNTABILITY: Let’s read 1 John 4:7-21 together. [Leader’s Tip: Soak in this passage by reading it two or three times.  Before the second time, ask your group to identify a word or phrase that God wants them to hear.  Pause to let them sit with the word/phrase, then read a third time. Discuss your words and phrases as a group.]
  4. DEVELOPING OTHERS: As disciples of Jesus, how do we obey the passage that we just read? [Risky question: As a small group, is there any command in this passage that we aren’t fully living out?]
